It was still dark when Finn opened his eyes. He didn’t move but let his eyes drift to the tree where he’d last seen Obsidian. The microraptor was still there—he could see the moon reflected off of its eyes. Only three times had Finn seen such a massive moon during his stay in the woods, and each time it was just as awe-inspiring as the last. Even now with three cauterized saber-tooth claw wounds over his ribs, he couldn’t help but stare at the craters of the moon, counting each one. He lifted his hand and pretended to pluck it from the sky.

How magnificent it would be to walk across that, he thought. I wonder if it’s as cold as here…kinda looks like a circular block of mammoth cheese.

His stomach growled at this. He was hungry and in a lot of pain. The Blade was doing an excellent job of keeping him warm, but his feet weren’t getting a lot of the heat and had gone halfway numb.

I need to get off this boulder while I still have my strength.

Finn adjusted himself over Jigsaw until he heard the snap which meant the Blade had attached itself to the Bizarre Baldric. Then, he rolled onto his stomach and crawled to the edge of the boulder. The smilodon was awake.

Of course it’s awake! he thought. If it was asleep then that would be too easy! And we can’t have easy, no we cannot.

There would be no sneaking around the overgrown big-toothed sloth, so Finn made a choice. He would face the smilodon head-on just as Bryce did. There just wasn’t any other option.

Finn stood himself up, puffing his chest out as much as he could. The saber-tooth must not have found this impressive, as it also raised itself and gave a good stretch and yawn.

“I’ll show you,” Finn promised, and was just about ready to lower himself to the ground when he realized he’d almost forgotten something.

He walked to the blue flag, tore it from the stick, and shoved it into the undergarments on the side of his leg but readjusted it so that it was sitting in front of his groin.

Well, I may not have plate armor, but at least the gooch troll is protected!

His head was still swimming from the pain as he tried using humor to keep his right mind from spiraling away. He only had one shot at this. If the smilodon managed just one single hit on him, then he was finished.

Finn pulled Jigsaw from his back and laid it onto the ice, teeth first. Before giving himself any more time to consider what he was doing, he and his Bizarre Blade were whizzing down the ice, sending a white powder into the air. Looking down, Finn could see the smilodon running towards where he would inevitably touch ground—but this was not his plan.

The saber-tooth flexed its claws as it waited for its dinner to arrive. Finn, using his instincts to let him know when, kicked the boulder as hard as he could, flipping backwards while pulling Jigsaw free from the ice.
